South by Southwest is opening a new cafe, SouthBites as part of its new downtown Austin headquarters, SXSW Center, on 1400 Lavaca Street in downtown Austin starting on Monday, June 3, which will be open to the public. The festival is also going to open an unnamed restaurant and bar within the office building, starting in February 2020.
SouthBites will feature to-go items like sandwiches, tacos, salads, pastries, etc., with vegetarian and vegan offerings too. While the cafe itself doesn’t feature dine-in space, people will be able to eat in the building’s lobby, which is open to the public.
As for drinks, SouthBites’ menu will include various Cuvee Coffee beverages from espresso to drip to cold-brew. However, SouthBite’s actual head barista Denise Caballero, who had been with Alabama-based coffee shop chain Revelator at its New Orleans’ locations, will start working with the cafe on Monday, June 17.
The cafe is being run by Pink Avocado Catering founder and executive chef Brent Schumacher and Quirino Silva, who had been previously the culinary operations director of Flyrite Chicken. Its hours will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the weekdays.
The name of the cafe had been the title of the festival’s now-defunct food trailer park.
The rooftop of the building will feature a private bar with alcoholic drinks and snacks, meaning it’s only open to the tenants of the building, aka SXSW employees, opening in the summer. That space will occasionally be open to the public through pop-up events.
