Sunrise Cafe plans May opening in Carlisle – Carlisle Sentinel

The walk-up window at a new downtown cafe is expected to open in May.

Tara Stasi plans to open the Sunrise Cafe, featuring menu items inspired by New York City and her Italian heritage, at 231 N. Hanover St. In addition to three seating areas inside, the cafe will feature a walk-up window on East Penn Street.

The cafe will feature coffee, teas and juice, bagels, baked goods, breads, sandwiches and soups. Decor will feature the work of local artists as well as period photos of the former residence and its transformations over more than a century.

The building was constructed in the mid-1800s as the home of John Hays, the founder of Frog, Switch & Manufacturing Co.

The Carlisle Borough Council Thursday approved a shopsteading loan for the project. Shopsteading loans come out of the Community Development Block Grant funding received by the borough.

The $35,000 shopsteading financing will be used for equipment, fixtures and furnishings, decor, inventory, supplies and working capital. Stasi is providing $37,000 owner equity to the project which, when added to the $60,000 owner investment in converting the building and customizing the space, brings the total project cost to $132,000.

The financing is at an interest rate of 2 percent on a 25-year term with a balloon payment in seven years.

As a condition of the loan, Stasi will create one full-time position or part-time equivalents for lower-income people at the location. She plans to open in May with 4 to 6 employees.
