We love the wide criss-cross straps of the Born Iwa. Made from supple leather, the straps envelope the forefoot and cover the bunion area without irritation. The insole is nicely cushioned but arch support is minimal. The Born Iwa is available in whole sizes 6-11 (order down if a half-size for best fit), $94.95 from Zappos and Nordstrom.
The Matai is Naot’s longtime best-seller for multiple reasons: removable cork/latex footbed with metatarsal and arch support, soft leather uppers that conform to shape of foot (including bunions) and a vamp that crosses well below bunion area. The hook and loop closure provides a snug fit at the instep. Read my detailed review or take it from a happy Zappos customer:
“Very supportive and attractive – I have a hard time finding shoes that accommodate my bunions and have enough padding and support in the footbed without being too wide in the heel. These are just about perfectly comfortable with the added bonus of having an interesting visual appeal-not too cloddy. Love ’em!”
Reviews are coming in 5-stars for this new closed-toe style by Birkenstock. The Tracy features soft nubuck uppers and a wide toe box to accommodate bunions. And of course you can’t go wrong with the supportive cork and latex Birkenstock footbed. Available in euro sizes 36-42 (5-11), narrow (fits more like a medium) and regular (fits like a wide) for $130 from Zappos, Happy Feet Plus, Amazon, and Birkenstock.com.

Do you shy away from heels for fear they’ll put pressure on painful bunions? Don’t give up quite yet! The Vionic Tawny platform sandal receives rave reviews, even from bunion-sufferers:
Eureka! Finally after ordering over half a dozen sandals, lugging them back to UPS I finally found the perfect sandal for me. I have tried on VIONIC shoes before but for one reason or another, never purchased any. I am a convert! I have a medium width foot but because I have a serious bunion I have to wear a Wide width or a medium that runs wide. Usually the better shoes run wider and I can wear them in a Medium. So these 8M are perfect on my 8M foot. They are comfortable, none of the straps rub where they shouldn’t. Because they are a platform, they really aren’t as high as they look and I have no trouble walking in them, even at my age!
It’s also helpful to note that the Vionic Tawny (and most Vionic styles) has excellent arch support!
Fitflop released two new styles this season that stylishly cover bunions and adjust to accommodate them. The Fay espadrille wedge and Felicity backstrap sandal feature twisted rope closures atop Fitflop’s trademark DuocomFF™ and Microwobbleboard™ midsoles. A Fitflop customer says this about the Felicity sandal:
“Not only comfortable, but also look great and will accommodate large bunions as well as hide them.”
